Summer 2005 - Volume 102, Issue 10

Will You Be Here For the Parade?!

When we moved here in November almost seven years ago, our new neighbors asked with great anticipation and enthusiasm, "Will you be here for the parade?!" After the third neighbor made the same inquiry we asked the date. We naturally assumed it was a Thanksgiving Parade. We were surprised at the response, "The Forth of July." Parades were a priority after having just moved from Louisiana where we embraced the Mardi Gras tradition. We changed our travel plans so we could stay in Barcroft for the 4th of July.

Our neighbor knocked on our door with urgency the morning of the 4th to tell us the parade had begun. We were still enjoying a slow pace adopted in Louisiana where parades start late and last long. As we went inside to retrieve our beverages and our camera, we were hurried along by our neighbor who was an experienced Barcroft parade spectator. He knew that when the parade starts, it passes quickly. Luckily, that year the parade took a wrong turn and went past our corner. We smiled knowing that our property was on a parade route--a valuable commodity in Louisiana.

We watched the parade, we cheered for the entries, we waved to our neighbors. They encouraged us to join in. We accepted their invitation and marched in the tail end of our first Barcroft 4th of July parade. We have been proudly marching ever since.

We ask our new neighbors, "Will you be here for the parade?!"

Attracting Butterflies to Your Garden

Ever wish you could just float along on the wind, pausing now and then as beautiful blooms catch your eye? You might think that butterflies have just such a carefree life; yet, their life cycle is much more intriguing and complex. As caterpillars these creatures can survive by dining on only a few very specific plants while at the same time avoiding becoming a tasty treat for birds or other woodland animals.

After morphing into a chrysalis, they must wait, unprotected, while transforming into a beautiful butterfly. Upon emerging as adults, they must hesitate, dangerously dangling on a twig or branch, while their wings dry so they can take flight. The cycle is only complete when the adult again finds the specific host plant on which to lay its eggs that will provide food for the emerging caterpillars.

You can attract butterflies to your yard and help them in their quest for survival if you provide the four basic elements of habitat in your yard. Food, water, sheltered places to rest and escape from the weather and predators, and places to raise young are critical to the survival ofthese magical creatures. If you're seeking inspiration this summer, look to the seemingly peaceful, but truly complex and often perilous life of butterflies.

The Arlington Community Wildlife Habitat team is ready to help you make your property friendly for butterflies and other wildlife. If you join the Neighborhood Challenge and get your property certified before September 30, 2005, you can help Barcroft gain bragging rights as the most wildlife-friendly place in Arlington! Arlington is well on its way to becoming the first county in the nation to be certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Community Wildlife Habitat.

Join in the excitement by certifying your yard! For more information, go to www.arlingtonenvironment.org or call 703-228-6427

What is that exciting hum about the neighborhood?! It is preparations for the July 4th Parade!

The World-Famous Barcroft String Band Wants You!

The Barcroft string band, probably the best string band in all of Barcroft, will be showcasing its formidable talents at the Barcroft 4th of July parade, traditionally held on July 4th. The string band consists of a motley assortment of instruments—fiddles, mandolins, guitars, accordions, flutes, and other less predictable instruments.

There are approximately eight fiddle tunes that we will be playing--mostly the same ones we did last year. There is a slight possibility that we will be joined by a Morris dance team, in which case we will need a couple different (but very easy) tunes.

Musically, this requires a great lack of sensitivity or taste, a sense of humor bordering on insanity, an appreciation of noisy raucous venues, and plenty of tolerance for just about everything. For clothing we prefer bright/festive/tropical/clashing/patriotic. If you would prefer to wear your tuxe, please do, but make sure your socks are Day-Glo.

If you think you might like to play with the World-Famous Barcroft String Band, contact Julie at 703-751-5168, or juliegorka722@hotmail.com. Music will be available by Tuesday, June 6. Packets will be awaiting you on the porch of 624 S. Buchanan Street.

Trolley on Columbia Pike

by Bill Nehrke

A trolley system with overhead cables is a bad idea, a very bad idea. This comes from someone who has grown up with trolleys and their inherent problems. From someone who grew up with a street car in front of my house it is my opinion that putting rails in on Colombia Pike will only worsen traffic, and it's bad enough now. Try driving around street cars. Figure how to decorate overhead trolley lines or handle a broken down car on the trolley lines or a broken down trolley that what will crash the system.

Let those advocating trolleys go get the Chicago records and find out why over 3 million people agreed to get rid of their trolleys. The only rails that will alleviate the situation is Mono-rail. This does not even appear in the list of options being considered. Let’s stop sloshing traffic around and provide a real alternative solution to the problem on Colombia Pike .

Want to think positive on the issue? Think about this. Tokyo has mono all the way to their airport from almost everywhere in the city. I have taken it to the airport - it's great. Disney has had great success with them. I've rode it too. I recall Seattle runs mono. Why not Colombia Pike and the citizens who live close by.

We ought to learn a lesson from history. Consider giving it to the commercial sector and keep Metro, the tax grabbing money monster out of it. Remember Metro put three [3] tax paying businesses, who were providing better service than we get now, out of business. And, by the way, government had more control over the bus services which used to be provided to the metropolitan area along with reasonable fares.

Respectfully submitted, Bill Nehrke

Helicopter Over Head

Helicopters are used on a daily basis by both public and private agencies to perform a variety of missions throughout the Metropolitan Washington region. In order to document these current helicopter operations, and to determine how they are affecting the region today and may do so in the future, the Metropolitan Washington

Council of Governments (COG) sponsored a regional helicopter system plan study. The draft report has been prepared and presented to a joint Maryland and COG Advisory Committee.

Questions regarding the study should be directed to George Nichols of COG at (202) 962-3355 or by email at gnichols@mwcog.org

Barcroft Community Coffeehouse Hosts Great Musicians

On Friday, May 6th, blues guitarist Paul Geremia performed at the Barcroft Community Coffeehouse concert. He is one of the many talented artists who have performed over the last year and a half at the community house as part of the coffeehouse series hosted by Barcrofters Danny and Beth Malks.

The community coffeehouse offers musicians and attendees a rare chance to participate in an entertaining concert in an intimate setting. The musicians to date have included folk, rock, blues, classical, celtic, and a children's concert by a Grammy award winning duet. Information on future concerts, including a Sept. 9th concert featuring Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer performing music for adults and a storytelling session with Jim Weiss on November 18, is available at www.communitycoffeehouse.org or email communitycoffeehouse@comcast.net.

Performances are very reasonably priced and all proceeds go directly to the artists. Don't miss out on this exciting local venue for live music!

Humor Outlawed in Barcroft

by Bill Nehrke

I hope our new officers in Barcroft will not go along with the "banning" of humor on the Barcroft Chat Group administrator is doing. According to the Chat group administrator it is spam.

For a number of years I have been putting good "humor" as it comes my way on the Barcroft Chat Group. Humor is a positive part of life. And according to a number of studies it even adds years to our lives. Especially when it is good clean humor. It lifts the spirits of many who receive it. If it lifted the spirits of only one it would be well worth it.

Agree or disagree? Drop a note, call [703 979-1166] or email [nehrke@juno.com].

Residential Parking

Arlington County has been undergoing a major review of its Residential Permit Parking program. County staff has conducted a community outreach process for over a year, and will soon be taking its final recommendations to the Planning and Transportation Commissions and the County Board.

We are very pleased with the changes we are proposing. The County’s draft recommendations that were presented in March have been revised based on citizen feedback and further research. The program changes regard issues such as which properties are eligible to participate in zoned parking, sizes and locations of zones, how the program is managed and enforced, visitor passes, and the hours that zoned parking is in effect.

The recommendations currently are being finalized, but they will be online at www.parkarlington.com beginning June 9, 2005. If you have questions about the recommendations, please come to an open Question and Answer Session on June 13th at 7 pm in the County Board room. Public hearings will take place before the Transportation Commission on June 23rd, the Planning Commission on June 27th and the County Board on July 9th.

If you have further questions, please contact the County at park@arlingtonva.us.

Thank you very much,
Sarah Stott

Real Estate Market Trends - June 2005

Earlier this year there were many more buyers than sellers in the local market, especially with the selection of nice affordable homes. In many cases there were buyers competing against other buyers, in a bidding war, often waiving the appraisal contingency and home inspection contingency. Stron financials are important as well for buyers. Consumer alert: one should always have a home inspection. While market forces are working against you in this regard, many buyers still ask to have a home inspection "for informational purposes only."

For sellers, if you've made the big decision to sell you home and move on, you know that the market is still great, although changing slightly from the Spring market. So all you have to do is plant the "FOR SALE" sign in your front yard and wait for the offers to roll in, right? WRONG! If "location, location, location" is the first rule of real estate, the second is "presentation, presentation, presentation."

Another key element is having a savvy listing agent who can market your home properly, network with other realtors who have buyers, and help a seller qualify the best contract to choose. The "auction strategy" is still working in this market although dynamics can change quickly. The housing stock in Arlington has increased over 35% in the last 60 days and initial realistic pricing still works best. As of this writing there are a total of 149 detached homes for sale in Arlington, 90 of them are under $1 million.
