President's Report

by Eric Harold

At last month’s meeting, we discussed whether to hold the annual 4th of July parade on Sunday July 4th or move it to Monday July 5th. A vote was held, and by unanimous consent the parade was moved to Monday July 5th. So, please mark you calendars and get your parade outfits ready for one of the many highlights of living in Barcroft.

Please attend our next meeting, Thursday April 1 (no foolin’). The meeting will start at 7:30 pm as usual. The program will include a presentation by a representative of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) about the Pike Transit Initiative. The Pike Transit Initiative will analyze alternatives for a new, high capacity and environmentally friendly transit service that will support the redevelopment plans both Arlington and Fairfax Counties have adopted in the study area (the Columbia Pike corridor from the Pentagon/Pentagon City area to the Baileys Crossroads area). Also on tap will be our annual gardening expo. It’s hard to believe that spring is here already. Stay tuned for details on speakers, and be prepared to get your gardens in shape.

I hope everyone is enjoying the taste of spring weather. See you all on April 1.

Heads Up!

After much discussion at the BSCL meeting and online, it has been decided to hold our Annual Barcroft Parade on July 5th, Monday. Most people felt the conflict between church services and the parade warranted rescheduling. Look next month for more information about the Parade and how you can participate!

Neighborhood Conservation Plan Update

Our neighborhood conservation plan is over 10 years old and is in need of a thorough review. It was a Herculean effort to produce the original. However, many of the goals have been accomplished and a review of what we want Barcroft to be is warranted.

While a wholesale revision may not be necessary, we do need to review it and bring it more in line with current neighborhood thinking and priorities. This is an opportunity to examine the entire neighborhood and provide more up-to-date thoughts on the pressing issues. The more current the plan is, the greater clout it will have on the County planning level.

Please take a moment to review the plan, which is located in its entirety on our web site at: http://www.bscl.org/ncplan.htm. At the May meeting, we will discuss what direction we should go with reviewing and updating the plan.

Neighborhood Yard Sale?

Last year, a neighborhood yard sale was held on May 31st. Lots of people participated and it was a nice chance to get out and meet some neighbors. Some people have asked to do it again this year— I propose another sale on either May 22nd or June 5th. Any preference? Let me know: 271-0631 or editor@bscl.org. Details next newsletter!

Neighborhood Day 2004

From County Board Chairman Barbara Favola and School Board Chairman Frank Wilson:

Arlington will observe its 8th Annual Neighborhood Day on Saturday, May 8th. This year’s theme is: "We Are the Neighborhood," and we invite you to join us in celebrating our pride in the vitality and diversity of our neighborhoods. Please save this date as a time to hold an event in your neighborhood or to take part in a community service project.

Several annual Neighborhood Day events have already been planned, including the Arlington Community Hero Awards, the Fort Myer Military Community Twilight Tattoo Ceremony, the Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s Walk for Animals, and, of course, the annual Neighborhood Day Parade.

The parade will begin at 2 p.m. and travel down Wilson Boulevard from the Clarendon Metro Station to the Courthouse area, followed by a multicultural concert at the end of the route.

Once again, the County will offer free trees to civic associations interested in neighborhood tree-planting activities. To reserve trees, please contact Jamie Bartalon in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Resources at 703-228-7747 or jbartalon@col.arlington.va.us.

For additional information on Neighborhood Day activities visit the Neighborhood Day Web site.

Hi Cue Update

Delegate Al Eisenberg has sent the following letter to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control supporting Barcroft in its effort to prevent Hi Cue from getting a permit to serve alcohol. Barcroft residents are encouraged to send Del. Eisenberg a note in appreciation!

W.Curtis Coleburn, III,
Chief Operating Officer
Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control
2901 Hermitage Road
Richmond, VA 23220

Dear Mr. Colburn,

It has come to my attention that the permit application to serve alcohol at the Hi Cue Billiard Hall, 940A South George Mason Drive in Arlington, is currently under review. I would like to voice my strong opposition to the granting of this permit. I join the Barcroft Civic Association and many of the constituents in my district in expressing my concern that previous occurrences of violence, including murders, at this establishment make it a poor risk. Serving alcoholic beverages will only add to the potential for violence that has already raised serious and justifiable neighborhood concern.

I would appreciate your consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,
Albert C. Eisenberg

Columbia Pike Transit Alternatives Analysis

Excerpted from a letter to our civic association:

In partnership with Arlington County, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will be leading a transit study, called the Pike Transit Initiative, for the Columbia Pike corridor from the Pentagon/Pentagon City area to the Baileys Crossroads area. The Pike Transit Initiative will analyze alternatives for a new, high capacity and environmentally friendly transit service that will support the redevelopment plans both Arlington and Fairfax Counties have adopted in the study area. This will include an analysis of technology options to be implemented (e.g., bus rapid transit, streetcar, light rail), the facility alignment and stop locations, and the termini locations.

As you may know, Arlington County recently approved the Columbia Pike Initiative—A Redevelopment Plan, for its portion of Columbia Pike. This effort resulted in a new and exciting vision for Columbia Pike—one that includes excellent transit service.

As with the Columbia Pike Initiative, the public process is an important component of this study. In May, WMATA and its partners in this study will hold public design dialogue sessions at a location(s) to be determined on or near Columbia Pike.

The study team would like the opportunity to introduce the Pike Transit Initiative to your Civic Association at one of your regularly scheduled meetings in March or April 2004. We look forward to meeting with the citizens in your neighborhood and discussing this important project.

Sincerely,

Robin McElhenny
WMATA Project Manager
Pike Transit Initiative

Thanks to the Barcroft Players for putting on a wonderful children’s show in March! I hear both performances were sold out! Great Work.

"Homes That Sell The Fastest,
Also Sell For The Most Money"

There’s a little-known dynamic in real estate that can dramatically affect the successful, top dollar sale of your home. See, that statement all boils down to the fact that The Elements That Motivate A Fast Home Sale…Are The Same Elements That Sell Homes For Top Dollar. Each year thousands of home owners needlessly lose thousands of dollars when selling their home. Those hidden profits exist in two areas.

First, most home owners never discover that certain small, even inexpensive repairs to their existing home could generate many times their cost in additional home value. But on the other hand, other repairs and improvements can cost you dearly. It’s critical to know what repairs and improvements to spend money on…and which ones to leave alone.

Second, when many savvy home owners decide to make profitable repairs before selling, they potentially expose themselves to the ruthless world of contractors and their schemes and potential rip-offs that drive up the costs of home repairs.  That’s why I created this helpful report. “Home Seller’s Guide to Money Making Fix-ups”. Contact me for a FREE copy. This way, you’ll be armed with knowledge and strategies to maximize the value of your home when you sell.
