President's Report

Business as usual is suspended for the December meeting. Please plan on joining your neighbors for our annual holiday party on Thursday December 4 at 7:30 pm. As usual, contributions of cookies, candies or other finger foods are welcome (and encouraged). Come celebrate the season with some songs, some stories, and your fellow Barcrofters.
Barcroft residents continue to show their generosity. BSCL received nearly $1,100 in donations for the month of October. This follows a September when Barcrofters donated $1945 to the community house fund. This is fantastic, and much needed as we embark on completing renovations of the interior of the Community House. Membership forms and dues keep coming in as well, with membership up to 233 households (397 individuals). Keep the memberships coming, and we can’t thank enough those who have made donations above the membership fee.
Please mark your calendars: because the first Thursday of January will be New Year’s Day, our normal meeting date has been switched to the next Thursday (January 8). The meeting will start at 7:30 pm as usual.
See you all at the holiday party on December 4.
Will the Grinch Steal Christmas?
Every December, we set aside business to welcome in the holiday season. We invite everyone, all ages, to gather to sing Christmas carols, hear talented neighborhood performers play and sing, hear a dramatic reading of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and await a surprise visitor (hint: carries his own bag). The surprise visitor will truly be a surprise this year: our traditional “visitor” has moved from Barcroft. So, we need a volunteer! Please, let’s not let the Grinch win the holiday party this year. Contact Annette Osso at annette@bscl.org if you have any contacts at the North Pole. This is really one of the special treats that goes with living in Barcroft. As usual, the gathering will be potluck—contributions of cookies, candies or other finger foods are welcome (and encouraged).

Barcroft School's Holiday Shop and Book Fair
5 Dec., 5:00 - 8:00 pm; 6 Dec., 9:00 - Noon; Barcroft School Multi-purpose room. The Holiday Shop lets children shop on their own; Volunteers help the kids select, wrap, and purchase gifts for friends and teachers while Mom or Dad wait outside!. Prices range from under $1.00 to $10.00. Bonus: Barcroft is also holding another Book Fair! This is a great opportunity for parents to pick up quality presents for their children.

Wakefield Traffic Calming

The Wakefield Traffic Calming Plan is in design and there is a proposed revision for the measure at the intersection with 6th Street.
Originally, the follow-up group led by Sue Tenenbaum requested a raised crosswalk at the intersection of Wakefield and 6th, between the north corners, which was a good idea except for storm drains. The storm drains preclude a raised crosswalk.
So the proposal is to relocate the measure south of 6th, but just past the corner because at that east corner, there is also a storm drain. A hump can be installed a bit past the corner.
These two measures are essentially the same thing but with a difference in surface finishing. Humps are of asphalt with white markings to alert drivers; raised crosswalks are often in brick color with impressed brick design on the surface, with white strips on each side.
Clarification questions have been sent to Jeff Sikes and by the time this is printed, Sue may have a response. Please contact her if you have further questions or suggestions.

Free Mulch in Barcroft: Help! I am overwhelmed with wood chips. They are white oak chips, of lovely appearance and excellent quality, but they are piled higher than my garage, and I hope to give most of them away. Please come help yourself. If you find large plastic pots near the wood pile, feel free to use them to haul away your bounty.....but bring them back some time. Otherwise bring your own trash bags or cans.
I don't recommend fresh chips like these around flowers or other shallow-rooted plants [dogwood, azalea). But they are excellent for paths and other spots where you don't want anything to grow. Don't bother to call. Just haul. You will probably not see them from the street. Walk towards the garage and they will magically appear. Sue Tenenbaum, Annie's Garden, 4413 South 8th St.

Looking for a Top Local Restaurant?
The October issue of Gourmet Magazine had an insert guide in their October issue titled "Guide to America's Best Restaurants." They featured six restaurants in Washington DC: four downtown, one in the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner, and the sixth ............ our own THAI SQUARE restaurant on Columbia Pike.
Thai Square was listed under "Neighborhood Gems." This great little restaurant is adjacent to Phnom Phen Jewelers just east of the Boston Market chain restaurant in the Westmont Shopping Center.
Gourmet Magazine's write-up stated that "Much as it would be in Bangkok, THAI SQUARE is family-run, friendly, efficient, and modestly priced. When you Buy (a summary report)
Most buyers have two primary considerations:
A. Finding a home that meets needs and desires.
B. Purchasing for the best reasonable price.
Although your agent's negotiating skills are important, there are three additional key factors that must come into play long before you ever submit an offer:
1. Make sure you know what you want with written needs versus wants (your goal is to find the home that meets your needs and fulfills your desires)
2. Find out if your agent offers a house hunting service, which will cross match your criteria will ALL available homes, and supply you with printed information on an on-going basis.
3. Understand how sellers set their asking price. There are four commons strategies to recognize:

(3) Priced correctly at market value
